Upcoming Scheduled Guest Speaker - Mark Scanlan of RedSeal, Inc. on Tuesday February 27, 2018 at Saint Patrick's Church in Our Lady Hall, Groveland, MA immediately after the Council's business meeting starting at 7:00 pm.
Mark Scanlan is currently a Cyber Warrior with RedSeal Inc, a cyber security analytics company. In this capacity, he works with organizations to help define their security strategy, harden their defenses and increase their resilience in the case of a cyber-attack. Mr. Scanlan is scheduled to speak about ways to ensure that our children are using cyber safety while online, and will discuss some of the techniques he has seen with cyber trolling that puts children in danger.
Mark brings 30+ years of experience in the IT field across operations, management, consulting and sales, including tenures with IBM, Fujitsu, Motorola and Microsoft. Mark attended the IT Institute at the University of Salford, the first IT-centric University Faculty of its kind in the UK. He moved from England to California in mid-90s, the boom years of Silicon Valley. Outside of work Mark believes in “using technology for good”. He worked informally with Microsoft’s Online Safety and Digital Crimes Unit and volunteers his technical skills with the NH Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Taskforce, who battle online child exploitation, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). To further this, Mark completed a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Forensics & Digital Investigation and has almost completed his Master’s Degree in Information Security Operations.
Father John Delaney - Pastor Sacred Hearts Parish
Father Delaney spoke about the challenges facing Catholic men in today's modern society. Subjects included work, family, and faith obligations and both the positive and negative impact of secular society's influencing men in today's fast paced always on world.
Father Benjamin LeTran - Parochial Vicar, Sacred Hearts Parish
Father LeTran spoke of his journey from Vietnam to the United States, his experiences as a seminarian on his journey to the priesthood, and his experiences as a priest.
Father John Leonard - Senior Priest
Father Leonard spoke about his calling to the priesthood and his experiences as a priest since being ordained in 1955, including his service as a Chaplin during the Vietnam War.
Steven Puopolo - Member of Council 5004
Brother Puopolo spoke about his experiences participating in numerous iron man competitions and the training involved in preparation for the same. He also had pictures and other visual aides from his participation in various iron man competitions including one in Australia.
Joseph Golden - Member of Council 5004
Brother Golden spoke about his experiences scuba diving in the Caribbean. In addition to having numerous mounted color photographs of the aquatic plant life, fish, coral, and ship wrecks, Joe also provided demographic information about the islands and inhabitants of the various dive locations.
Jeffrey Clark, Attorney At Law - Member of Council 5004
Brother Clark is an attorney and gave a presentation on estate planning. In addition to having an audio visual presentation explaining the benefits of Wills, Health Care Proxies, Powers of Attorney, Trusts, and other estate planning tools, Jeff addressed numerous questions brothers had about this important subject.
Tracy Gilford - Professional Photographer & Lieutenant, Groveland Fire Department
Mr. Gilford is a Lieutenant with the Groveland Fire Department and gave a presentation about the history of the Groveland, Massachusetts Fire Department, the latest equipment used by members of the department, and had a visual presentation of various fires and accidents the Groveland Fire Department has responded to. Tracy also demonstrated some of the equipment used by firefighters.
Lawrence Ordway, Handyman - Member of Council 5004
Brother Larry owns a handyman service and gave a presentation on how to make home repairs and when to call a professional for help. Larry's presentation included the use of various plumbing, electrical, and wood related equipment and tools. Larry addressed numerous questions brothers had about their own home repair issues.
Betty Desjardins - Pastoral Associate, Sacred Hearts Parish
Mrs. Desjardins is the Pastoral Associate for Sacred Hearts Parish in Bradford and Groveland, Massachusetts. She spoke about her background as a teacher at Central Catholic, her experiences when the school changed from a boys only school to a coed school, what lead her to consider a career as a pastoral associate, what her duties are as a pastoral associate and what it is like working with the parishioners, priests, deacons, and staff at Sacred Hearts Parish on a daily basis.
Father Richard M. O'Brien
Father O'Brien spoke about his journey to the Priesthood and his experiences during his many years of service to the Catholic Church and how he came to be known as the "Singing Priest" to many parishioners.
Deacon Eric Peabody, Sacred Hearts Parish
Deacon Eric Peabody spoke about his journey to becoming a Permanent Deacon and the role of Deacons in the Church, as well as his duties as the Permanent Deacon at Sacred Hearts Parish.
Tracy Gilford - Professional Photographer & Lieutenant, Groveland Fire Department
Mr. Gilford along with his fellow members of the Groveland Fire Department, graciously gave us a special "hands on" presentation of firefighting techniques and firefighting equipment at the South Groveland Fire Station, located on Washington Street, in Groveland, Massachusetts.
David McMenemy - Member of Council 5004
Brother Dave gave a presentation on he and his wife Rose's recent trip to Germany and Prague. Dave's presentation included pictures of numerous churches, artifacts, and public Advent and Christmas fairs, as well as local cuisine. Dave addressed questions brothers had about the locations he visited and the people he met.
Brendan Keenan - Principal, Dr. Elmer S. Bagnall Elementary School, Groveland, MA
Principal Keenan gave a presentation on his journey to becoming an elementary school principal. Mr. Keenan's presentation included a discussion of the challenges small town elementary schools face, such as budgetary constraints, staffing needs, technology and school supplies and current curriculum for elementary students. Mr. Keenan talked about the importance of parent and community involvement and expressed his love of working with students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members in providing the best education possible to students. Mr. Keenan also thanked Council 5004 of the Knights of Columbus for its annual backpack school supply drive in which the council has donated backpacks filled with school supplies for children whose parents might otherwise not be able to afford.
